Jesus Fucking Christ On A Pogo Stick, You Have Made Life Worthwhile.
Thank you so much for putting up a Starstuff page! I swear I was the only
human alive (apart from my wife, named 'Star,' if you believe it or not)
that watched this show.
Now, if someone would only find a lost episode of the Candy Apple News!
You completely rock. If I ever meet you here in town, I owe you several

As I was walking back to my apartment with a friend of mine, an interesting
topic came up. He said "Yo, you are going to think I am crazy, but
there was this show
that I used to watch on saturday mornings about a kid who talked to a girl in
the future
and had a massive computer setup in his apartment."
It hit a switch, and I remembered Star Stuff. Its cool to see someone
else recalls it

Also I am CCing my friend who is all into the show as well.

Hello,
I just wanted to email you and comment you on your efforts of making a website
for
Starstuff. I remember watching that show every Saturday growing up...I
also used to
wake up early to watch it. I am also 26. Starstuff (and later,
Candy Apple News
(I can still remember the theme song)) became a lasting impression of my years of
growing up in Philly...I kind of miss it. Oh yeah
speaking of theme music, did you
know that the music for Starstuff is from "The
Planets" by Gustav Holst? I have
since moved away and have not met anybody else who knew about the show...I
recently
learned that it aired only locally. Have you been able to find other
footage of the
show? Write back if you like...it would be cool to correspond with you.

First, let me say that I found your site while totally slacking off at
work. The best
web searches always happen this way. Anyway, I was typing in my usual
searches that
never bring anything up and your page came up, to my surprise.
This was one of my favorite shows. I too thought I imagined the whole
thing. (nothing on
the web!) I am a couple years older than you and I have been trying to
find out
information on this show since web browsing existed. Thank you for
keeping such a great
memory alive in the few of us that really liked that show. (Imagine my
horror when the
next season never came and the show went off the air)
Oh...if you were a Marlo & the Magic Movie Machine Fan...there is a web
page. (...and Star
Blazers, etc.)
I am a father of three now and I tell you what: rug-rats, Pokemon and power
rangers will
never have any lasting influences on the kids.
In any event, I remember a couple of more things about the show. It was on at
Chris' mom was visible, at least in the last
episode. She came in to his room and asked
if he was ready to go. I remember her looking
like Patricia Richardson from Home
Improvement. That was the second to last
shot. The final shot was a flip back to Ingrid
repeating, "If we don't hook up, just look
up."
Thanks again.

Matt, I can't begin to tell you how you have made my day! For years, I
have been trying
to find people who remember "a show where this kid had a big computer and
he talked to a
girl on a space station in the future and showed her Laurel & Hardy
clips." The only
specifics I remembered were that the show ended with a Muppet-like segment
called "The
Edge of Space". Many attempts at finding information about this show
on the internet
failed. That is, until yesterday when I found your web site.
It's starting to make sense now . . . in all the years I've asked people
about this show
(and no one but my dad and brother remembering anything about it), only one college
friend
recalled watching it, and she too was a Philly native. It makes sense,
now that you
pointed out that it was produced by WCAU and only aired in the Philly market.

Matt,
. . . we thought that we were the only ones. A few of my friends
and I (all about 26-28)
have found ourselves chatting about "classic" shows like StarStuff
over a cup of coffee on
several occasions. We would go on all night long about Chris, Ingrid, the
space colony
and arguing about what channel aired the show so many years ago. In fact,
I did a bit of
e-mail writing myself about a year ago that didn't come
close to the holy grail you have
obtained. (Including Lawana R. Scales, the current
Director Of Programming at

Dear Matt;
While scrolling through many, many listings for WCAU,just out of idle
curiosity, I happened upon your web page for StarStuff and was dumbfounded
by the amount of information you remembered and were able to uncover about
that show from so long ago. As your incredibly complete credit list shows
I was director of that show as well as writer of The
Edge of Space puppet
segments.
What a treat to read the response you got from Mark Ritts. I haven't been
in touch with him for many years. He's a greatly talented performer and
one of the funniest people I ever worked with. We really had a ball with
those segments. Unfortunately,I must confess right off the bat that I do
not have any copies of the show and I'm pretty sure
none exist. They were
shot on 2" video tape,a bulky and cumbersome format that has long gone the
way of the dodo bird, and when I checked around before retiring in
1994,just about every box of 2" tape had been tossed out to make room for
storage of computer print out paper.
I believe the shows were dubbed to 1" tape and re-run a few times, but
even
that format is no longer in use and I doubt there is anyone working there
now who would have any idea what happened to those copies.
I often wonder what became of Todd and Johanna after that year. They were
hard working kids who by now probably have kids of their own.I must repeat
my amazement at your continuing interest in the show and that of those who
E-mailed you so many enthusiastic responses.(I also
directed Candy Apple
News , which some of your respondents
mentioned,the following season.) I
regret that I have no copies or memorabilia of these
shows to offer. At
the time we were just caught up in the day to day work of getting the
shows done and on the air,and gave little thought to the kind of longevity
of interest you and your friends demonstrate.
Best regards,

Hi Matt,
I can't believe after all this time someone else was sharing my same thoughts about STARSTUFF.
I read your notes about trying to find information about the former WCAU Saturday morning broadcast of the show. I contacted Mark Ritts back in Early 2003 as well about the series but, he only had a small amount of information to give me. I am also 26 years old and used to wake up every Saturday morning back in the 80's to catch the show. It usually aired "seasonal", Because Candy Apple News Company would follow the seasons after Starstuff. I used to tape it in it's final "airing" back in the very early 90's, but wound up throwing out the tapes. (oopps)
Anyway, Excellent job in bringing back a piece of that series with your web page! Since it's been forgotten about, and since WCAU is no longer around, the original tapes have probably been tossed out.

Matt,
I can't thank you enough for investigating this show and providing a website. I had tried many times over the past 2 years to find out what that show was called. I tried every search engine imaginable with many different descriptions of the show that I remembered from my childhood. I even asked everyone I knew about the show but no one could give me an answer or could remember what I was talking about. Up until about a week ago, I was still puzzled. Then I was talking to my wife's uncle. He is a complete TV, music and movie expert regardless of what decade it came out in. It is his life. One day we got to talking and I mentioned it to him. Without even hesitating, he just said "Oh Yeah" "Starstuff" "Local show from the 80's that played laurel and hardy clips" He told me what the show as if everyone knew it like common knowledge. That aside, I then searched for StarStuff on the web and stumbled across your site. It is awesome!
Thanks again!

Matt, my name is Parri and I also grew up in the Philly area. I was excited to find your very comprehensive website dedicated to Star Stuff. I scour the web every six or nine months seeking information on the show, and I was fortunate to come across your site. I'm 29 now and clearly remember waking up early on Saturday morning and running downstairs in time for Star Stuff.
It would air right after some boring political talk shows my dad would watch during the 5:00am hour. It was among my favorite shows, up there with Candy Apple News, Electric Company, and Starcade. Two of my favorite cartoons which you may also remember were Battle of the Planets and All Star Blazers.
I didn't realize it was only a local broadcast, which explains why none of my college friends recognized the show I was describing to them and trying to recall. One detail you might confirm for me was if the Edge of Space main characters were from the Red and Blue planets; I could be remembering a different show.

Parri

My name is Aaron..and although I live in LA..I grew up in Philly..and i'm so glad to see a site about Starstuff..I was looking years ago on the `net to find info and I couldn't..what happened to the actors on the show?
I also remember the show airing at 6 a.m...which is why probably half the people my age never saw it. I used to watch the programming on WCAU until about 11am before I turned to Saturday morning wrestling (another thing I miss - wrestling on Saturday mornings, that is).
I also remember the lame show "Kids World" which turned into "Wide World Of Kids".
As my "mind like a steel trap of useless information" recalls, Starstuff may have aired before Candy Apple News before I was old enough to remember but to my BEST recollection - in the mid to late 80's, WCAU would air "Candy Apple News" sometimes (probably until the series finale) and then air "Starstuff" and show the shows interchangably. I remember this because I'd go to watch Starstuff at 6 a.m. and see "Candy Apple News" on and my mom would tell me "Oh..they're probably making new episodes of Starstuff"..so as far as I recall..the shows aired interchangably..and not back to back.
I also remember the last episode I ever remember seeing was the one where Chris' uncle was attacked on the roof or out of the room by some burglars..I never knew there was actually a final "starstuff" episode where Chris says goodbye to Ingrid as previously mentioned in the e-mails to your site.
Also - funny enough - I remember seeing a box of PathMark brand cereal in Chris' room on some episode or another. LOL. PathMark..how I miss that supermarket.

Hey Matt,
This is incredible... I can't believe that I came across your
site.. I have been searching the internet for a long while
looking for anything relating to StarStuff. I just turned 30
this year, but distinctly remember this show coming on early
in the mornings when I was younger. I couldnt remember the
name of the show.. Just the general premise.. and that it
usually included Laurel and Hardy clips. Tonight when I was
browsing the internet looking at old TV shows, it came to

hardy ingrid" and came up with your website.
Looking at these pictures for the first time in what must be

Who can say why, but something made me want to try again today, and I'm

compiled! The site is great: content, pictures, everything. I love it. I
regret that I didn't know of this site's existence for about 18 months,
but it looks like I found it at a good time, regarding the recent
contact from Todd Porter. You've said that he has all of the episodes on

be as good as the one you have now, Episode #11?

Matt,
I stumbled across your website today, and wanted to personally thank you for jogging my half-remembered memories of watching Starstuff. I was about 14 or 15 when Starstuff was first aired; I think I discovered it a year or two into reruns. I took to it immediately, and saw each episode multiple times. I remember wanting my own space girl, and hoping that Chris and Ingrid would meet up again somewhere on the astral plane. Watching the stills and listening to the sound clips brought me right back to my Central Jersey living room, eating cereal and keeping the sound low enough not to wake anyone else up. How cool that Todd Porter got in touch with you! I wonder where Johanna Hickey is now.
I wrote a post about the site and the show for my blog, which you can read here: http://djearlybird.blogspot.com. Feel free to link if you’d like.
Thanks again and good luck!

I've looked for Starstuff on the Internet before (I figured it was Star Stuff), but this is the first time I found any evidence of its existence. That it's a Philadelphia thing makes it worse. At least people remember Noah's Ark (Red and yellow, and pink and greeen...) and Saturday Night Dead. But this is the first time I've talked to someone who remembers Starstuff.
There's nothing I can say, really, that you haven't heard before. 'I thought it was a dream'; 'I figured I was crazy'; and so on. That Starstuff actually exists isn't as gratifying as reading all the e-mails from others who thought they were crazy! Bless you for putting Starstuff on the Internet. It's such a relief. I've had the image of that kid in front of the monitor talking to the girl in space since the show was on TV.
I didn't realize she was in the future. I thought she was orbiting the earth for a limited period of time - and in the last episode, her ship leaves for another galaxy; or maybe that's just years of my filling in the blanks.
If you have a mailing list, please add me to it.
Thank you so much. It's gratifying to know there's evidence of Starstuff somewhere.

Wow, I am so pleased that a site has been dedicated to Starstuff, and even more pleased that the complete set of episodes may soon be available!
I taped the last episode off the air, but I'm embarrassed to say it is somewhere in the boxes from my parents' recent move to San Francisco. It will be unearthed eventually, of course. I've always regretted that I didn't have the presence of mind to tape the whole series. As I recall (and my memory may be wrong), I originally saw it on Sundays in 1980-81, but it was rerun on Saturday mornings in the mid-80's, probably the 1986-87 season, alternating with Matt Robinson's "The Candy Apple News Company." (If I had the tape handy, I could see what else was recorded on it and tell you the year exactly. Oh well.) 6 a.m. is probably right for the mid-eighties reruns, because I'm pretty sure that Chief Halftown and Flash Gordon were on after it at 7:00 and 7:30 (on channel 6 and channel 3 respectively).

Subject: another "so I WASN'T crazy!" thank you note
Hi Matt,
After reading all these other emails you posted on the site, I had to write
one as well. THANK YOU FOR MAKING A
I was only about three years old when I watched Star Stuff, but after seeing
the screenshots and reading these emails, so many pieces came back to me --
it's
amazing what sticks in the deep recesses of your brain! I was prompted to
search for Star Stuff on Google after reading an article by Charles Spano, a
writer for Dirtyloop.com's music. He writes:
"There used to be a live-action Saturday morning TV show called Star
Stuff about two lovelorn teen pen pals kept apart by geography - the boy lived
on Earth
and the girl on a space station. Those old and lucky to remember the program no
doubt still find themselves haunted by the conspicuous sense of emptiness and
intimacy the supposed children's show conveyed. The same souls certainly
remember the show's music, a powerful score wholly different than the pap
heralding
The Bugaloos, The Great Space Coaster and Smurfs of the day. The theme music
was from Holst's The Planets, expressing the gravity of life more than the
gravity
of orbits or planetary ellipses."
I did a mental double-take when I read this excerpt of Spano's article at http://www.dirtyloop.com/HerSpaceRockpileProfile.html. Star Stuff! My memory had a NAME! I wasn't ALONE! Huzzah! I had really begun to think that memories of Star Stuff were just a dream, pieced together from other subconscious childhood elements. But now I definitely remember the Laurel & Hardy clips. And that I thought Chris was such a handsome "older" man. And that Ingrid's room was sooo cool. And that, at the time, I was TERRIFIED of the puppets in The Edge of Space, and would leave the room if I was watching alone. (Kids. Go figure.) It was a great blast from the past.
I will forward your site to all the people I can think of in our age bracket from the surrounding Philadelphia area. I grew up in North Delaware, so I'm sure a lot of them will come here and see my email and remember seeing it too. Thanks again for making this site!

Subject: STARSTUFF
I just read through all the E-mails on your web site and was a bit bemused by all the people that thought themselves crazy for remembering StarStuff. Admittedly I know I am a bit different from most people: I'm 29 years old and have crystal clear recollections of my doings from the 80's (HA, imagine that)!
You have no idea how many strange looks I've gotten over the years from mentioning StarStuff, The Edge of Space, The Candy Apple News, Rick of the Mounties and his Pal Yukon Thing, and singing Captains Noah (and wife)'s Rainbow Song (amongst other things)!! No one knows what I am talking about! It's so funny.
Do you remember how near the end of the StarStuff season, Chris and Ingrid figured out Chris might still be alive in her time and Ingrid and her Aunt were going to Earth for the first time in Ingrid's life and she was going to try to look up Chris? If you have any questions still about any of that old stuff the feel free to E-mail me any time. I usually remember all that stuff and if by some chance I can't remember I can usually find someone that does.
BTW, like all the other males that have E-mailed you; I had a HUGE crush on Ingrid too! If you ever get to talk to and meet up with Johanna Hickey I will be so jealous that I will immediately start web pages on EVERYTHING I remember from the 80's that people have given me strange looks for!

Dear Matt,
Thanks for taking the trouble to put together the StarStuff site.
Every once in a while vague memories pop into my head about this show. It is interesting to hear you say that you thought you might have imagined the whole thing . . . I have asked myself the same question many times. I'm the oldest of six kids, but I was the only one that got up to watch the show. When I ask my sibs about it, they just look at me funny and shake their heads.
The one thing that stayed with me clear as a bell was the theme music. Today I happened to hear "The Planets" on CD, and it made me think of the show. Little did I know that your site was one quick Google away! One look at the screen shots brought it all flooding back! Finally I can cross "strange random kid-show memories" off of the list of possible reasons to suspect I'm going crazy. (It's still a long list, though. ::sigh::)
I was very interested to read the details of your conversation with Todd Porter, and I'm wondering if you've had a chance yet to meet him.
(BTW I grew up in Lansdowne, Delco, and now live in the Fairmount (Art Museum) neighborhood of Philadelphia. I am now 31.)
Thanks again for your hard work on the site. I can't tell you how much it has made my day. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hey there,
I really like and appreciate your website on Starstuff. I speak not only for
myself but several friends when I say that it's a tremendous joy and relief
to realize that we didn't just make this show up in our heads.
I am wondering if you have any clue about another such program, which I
think was localized to Philly and was on TV around the same time as
Starstuff. I can't remember too much, but it was some sort of kids program
set in the Yukon, and there was a Yeti-like character that I believe was
called "Yukon Thing," as well as a mountie character who I think had
some
sort of mailbag segment on each show. I believe it was the same kind of live
action/ puppet setup as Starstuff. That's pretty much all I can remember. I
have spoken with a few other people who have equally vague memories of this
show, so I know I didn't imagine the whole thing, but I hope you may have
some leads on what it was called and where I might be able to dig up
information about it.
If you have nothing, I totally understand. I can't believe you were able to
amass so much information on Starstuff. Thanks for your time and again
thanks for the website. Take care.

Thanks so much for this site. I am 34 now and want to someday share it with my son. I do appreciate your work StarStuff was a part of my childhood that I loved, and like you I sat down with a bowl of cereal before my parents woke up and watched it and the Candy Apple News Company. I recently taught my son the Color song that Captain Noah sung. The Philly kids of today are missing out on shows that were a great part of our childhood. I thank you so much for your efforts, and really love the site.
Thanks,
Edward

Hi,
I've been trying to remember the name of that series
for years; imdb searches in the past never proved
fruitful. Tonight I found it (by searching for sci-fi
tv series between 1980-1984) and immediately found
your site. Thank you for preserving information about
this show!

Hey Matt,
I can't believe that you have a site dedicated to Starstuff!!! It took me about 2 years of searching to remember what the name of this show was! I think me and my sister are the only 2 who remember this show out of our circle of friends we grew up with.
Thanks Matt!

Matt, great site, I honestly thought I had imagined the whole show myself.
I was actually searching for Candy Apple News and found this both great
shows. I used to watch another show, about Latin kids, it was on early
Saturday mornings. Thanks for reminding me of my childhood.

Hey Matt!
I am so excited to find out that I did not imagine this great show! For years I have been laughed at by friends not from the Philly area because they have never heard of Starstuff (or the Candy Apple News for that matter). I would love a copy the shows so I can not only enjoy them myself but show them to my friends. My son is 3 years old and a big space nut. I would bet the farm he’ll love it too. Please add me to your list of Starstuff fans that want a copy of one of the best local shows ever!!!
Thanks,

Subject: Glad to have found your StarStuff Page
Hi Matt,
I'm 26 and through a search bumped on your page of
StarStuff. I remember waking up early on Saturdays
too, when the sun wasn't even up to watch it. I don't
know if you were a fan,but I usually also watched
Candy Apple News which usually followed StarStuff.
I am not positive, but I have a vague recollection,
why Chris had to hide Ingrid and the screen from
people was because of the government finding out about
it. I vaguely remeber an episode where a police man
came by about some sort of interference with his
equipment. I'm proabbly way off.
Thanks for the site.

I just found your site. I am a little tipsy right now, so I'm sorry
for the premature email. I'm not one to bother other people. Years
ago when I was in college I remember laying awake one night talking
with my roommate about old TV shows. I told him that one of my very
earliest memories of anything was of a show about a boy who spoke
with a girl over a TV set live, I thought she was on a moon colony or
space station or something - and I couldn't remember the name. We
were both from the NJ/Phila area and after a while he said the words
'Star Stuff', and I got the chills. It all came flooding back to
me. So I started my search, but Google did not reveal much - just a
few posts here and there. I got the name of Mark Ritts, and an email
address, but he said he didn't have anything from the show and I
should contact WCAU. I didn't, figuring they would not know what I
was talking about. So I left it at that. Just for kicks today I
typed in a query into google and found your site. I got the chills
all over again. I'll be pouring over it for a little while.
Just
wanted to send you a note to thank you and say 'wow'.

Hey Matt,
I LOVE your site! I was so excited when I found StarStuff on the web! You have
a lot of great information about the show. You
wouldn't happen to have any info about The Candy Apple News Co. would you?

Matt,
Timing is everything, and it's a complete thrill to find your site. Just about
2 weeks ago, I was trying to describe this show to some people I know. I could
not remember the title, and nobody else had any idea what I was talking about.
I even dramatically performed "The Edge of Spaaaace!" to no avail.
Oh, well. It's not the first time my friends have looked at me like I'm from
another planet, though. LOL

80’s tv listings for a really long time. I had NO idea what it was
called. YOU
Thank you again. And I can’t think of a single person to call at 1:33am to tell them this news!!!!

Matt,
Chalk me up as one of those folks who is relieved that they're not crazy, and
this show really did exist. Aside from your site and another passing mention on
a TVparty.com site about old Philadelphia kids shows, there is no evidence
anywhere of this show existing. WHEW! Thanks for taking a load off my
brain...it took me forever to remember the darn title. Anytime I hear Jupiter
from The Planets by Holst it would drive me nuts due to my mental association
to this show. Thanks for the research!

My sister Sydney (who I am copying on this email) and I used to watch

loved the show and couldn't wait for the next episode to find out what
happened between Chris and Ingrid! Thank you so much!

Subject: Thank you for your StarStuff page
I am 26 years old, and grew up in the suburbs of Philly. Like many tv
shows from my childhood, I remembered StarStuff. During/after my years
in college, I had searched online for any mention of the show.
However, I didn't find anything about the show, except for a few
comments about the half-remembered show on a few message boards.
Unlike others, I *knew* the show was real - I hadn't
imagined it,
there was no doubt in my mind. I remembered the
Candy Apple News
Company also, but felt that it paled in comparison to StarStuff. I
remembered Ingrid's satellite floating in space during the closing
credits; I disliked when Chris would show Laurel & Hardy videos - it
felt like a cheap way to fill up episode time that was better spent
with the main characters; my eyes still tear up when I
hear Holst's
"Jupiter", bringing forth the idea of two
friends, forever separated
by time and space.
Today, browsing the web, I found www.starstuff.net. The pictures and
audio brought back even more memories that I didn't even know I had. I
had completely forgotten about "The Edge of Space" until I saw the
images and listened to the introduction. Thank you for this gift from
the past.
